Choosing Happy by Samantha Harris is the second book in the Madison Square series that surrounds a group of friends whose love of trivia and each other takes them back to their family owned bar “The Den” weekly. We first met these characters in Harris’ first novel in this series Somewhere In Between in which she gave us the story of two best friends who tiptoed the line between friendship and something more. In Choosing Happy, Harris takes you on a very different journey with a recent executive divorcee Madison and fun loving ladies man Sean, a member of the original Den group. Madison and Sean’s relationship was completely different than I expected causing me to be completely submerged into this novel until the very end.
Harris did an amazing job of deeping this story into something more than an age gap. The characters she created in Sean and Madison had so many layers to them. With each peel of a layer, Harris captivated my attention further making me fall more deeply for their love story. Although at times I found Madison’s character harder to picture I still found her struggle relatable, her feelings real and her dreams hopeful. This story was almost a five star for me, but something I can’t quite put my finger on holds me back from completely handing over my final star. I just needed something more.
With all that aside, I still found myself reading this book cover to cover in the same day. The story reeled me in and took me back to a cast of characters I already had fell deeply in love with reminding me exactly why I love picking up Harris’ books. Choosing Happy is something different, a book that tells you an unexpected story of love. I can only look forward to another book in this series. Here’s hoping to finally find out what the sexy bartenders been up to.
Samatha “Sam” Harris lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her husband David and daughter Ava. Born in Florida, she migrated north which most people agree was a little backwards. She has been an artist all of her life, a Tattoo Artist for more than ten years, and a storyteller since she was a kid.
Sam has a slightly unhealthy love for Frank Sinatra, classic movies, and Jazz and Blues music, but her first love will always be reading. From Romance, to Thrillers, to Historical Fiction and everything in between, she loves to become a part of the story. As a writer she tells the stories that she would want to read.
