SEEKING THE SMART ONE
Twenty-four-year-old Jen Reid had her life in good shape: an okay job, a tiny-cute Seattle apartment, and a great boyfriend almost ready to get serious. In a flash it all came apart. Single, unemployed, and holding an eviction notice, who has time to remember trying out for a reality show? Then the call comes, and Jen sees her chance to start over—by spending her summer on national TV.
Luckily The Fishbowl is all about puzzles and games, the kind of thing Jen would love even if she wasn’t desperate. The cast checks all the boxes: cheerful, quirky Birdie speaks in hashtags; vicious Ariana knows just how to pout for the cameras; and corn-fed “J-dawg” plays the cartoon villain of the house. Then there’s Justin, the green-eyed law student who always seems a breath away from kissing her. Is their attraction real, or a trick to get him closer to the $250,000 grand prize? Romance or showmance, suddenly Jen has a lot more to lose than a summer . . .

There is just something that makes me one click every time I see a reality tv based book. Laura Heffernan’s America’s Next Reality Star was no different. This book intrigued me with it’s Big Brother style premise and a promise of an angsty showmance between housemates. What I wasn’t expecting was the clever thought out games and the witty, hilarious banter written by Heffernan.
In America’s Next Reality Star we meet Jennifer, a down on her luck has been marketing assistant competing to win a quarter of a million dollars. At first she’s all about the game play and money, but quickly a fellow contestant catches her eye. Only he seems to be taken by the she-villan.
Throughout this book Heffernan easily kept me entertained by the antics of these contestants. Each personality was well developed and thought out playing effortlessly against each other. While reading this book came to life in my head as if I was watching the real live feeds to get the scoop on Jennifer and Justin.
While I loved all the wonderful game play and Big Brother esk back stabbing, I hated that Heffernan somewhat short changed this romance between Jennifer and Justin. I wanted her to amp up the tension between these two more. About the time she really let readers believe the relationship and feelings were returned she quickly ended the book. I felt like the live feed was snapped off just as it was getting good! I wanted more of Jennifer and Justin!
While I did want an extended version of Justin and Jennifer sealing the deal, I really enjoyed reading my first novel by Heffernan. She will be an author I will continue to read and catch up on all prior releases. If you are a lover all things reality and showmance then make sure you one click this one!
