Alexis Anne’s newest sport romance release, Night Games is worth watching the player play the ultimate game- love. In Night Games, we meet Carrie and Wes. A pro baseball player and a orthopedic surgeon for the opposing team. These two meet after being introduced by mutual friends and the attraction continues to build until a Vegas wedding whim changes everything.
Anne’s overall story was one that quickly caught my eye. Early on, the promise of a quick, Vegas wedding and the uh-oh aftermath filled with sizzling sex and sexual tension definitely had me turning the pages. However, I think missing out on the rest of this series kinda messed it up for me. Immediately you are thrust into a current story line that must have concluded book 5. Which I am guessing featured June and Roman, two friends of Wes and Carrie. While it didn’t tell you much about June and Roman’s romance, I felt like it left a little out of what happened between the current characters featured in Night Games. Soon I realized Anne was going to let this play out in flashback scenes.
Now, I am a lover of good flashbacks, do not get me wrong. However, I feel like this book would have been so much better if it was written in order letting the sexual tension, angst driven feelings and love build naturally rather than flipping us readers back and forth . Anne has all the makings of an epic story, I just found myself frustrated maneuvering through the before and after feelings making me connect less to these two.
However, when Anne brings the sex, she brings the sex. These two couldn’t keep their hands off each other even when their conversations had me going… Huh. Now, we still have sex? Wes and Carrie’s physical attraction was off the charts. These two were made for each other even if Carrie did not want to admit it. Which brings me to Carrie.
Carrie has the man we all want. Driven in life and in love. She frustrated me in this story. She had the perfect man who was obviously oh so in love with her at her feet, yet she couldn’t give in. While I respect a woman who knows what she does or doesn’t want, I kept thinking, oh give in already. It’s obvious you want to.
While I had a few issues with the book and how it was written, Anne still delivered a good story line that continued to read. I absolutely loved, rooted for and wanted Wes to succeed in winning her over. He is the kind of sports romance star worth reading.
Former archaeologist Alexis Anne (who also writes romantic
suspense as Alexis Sykes) has worked as an oral historian, GIS specialist,
field archaeologist, college professor, and small business owner, before
deciding that working from home and writing books was a lot more satisfying.
She writes steamy, sexy romance with one half of her brain and romantic
suspense, action adventure, and children’s books with the other half.
Growing up she traipsed through the islands of the Gulf Coast,
camped in the Everglades, dove the Keys, and generally felt more at home
spending her days outdoors with a good book. She currently lives in a home
filled with wild men (otherwise known as her extremely extroverted husband, The
Sexy Editor, and their two kids), a husky, and a superhero guinea pig.
